Will We Soon Be Interviewed by AI Recruiters

October 7, 2026

It is already happening. The benefits of AI are relatively easy to understand for resume analysis and job-posting creation. But what happens when specialized AI agents conduct interviews or even recommend candidates?

My Job Interview with a Robot

A recent Isarta article brought together candidate opinions about interviews conducted by so-called robot recruiters. These automated conversations are trained on data and patterns drawn from real interviews led by people.

Some candidates see advantages:

  • The conversation can feel surprisingly fluid and human.
  • The system is available at any time, including outside business hours.
  • Some candidates believe a machine may be more objective and less affected by human bias.

Others see serious disadvantages:

  • The experience can feel impersonal and may miss nuance, tone, irony or humour.
  • Candidates may question the culture of an organization that delegates the first conversation to a machine.
  • Some interpret it as a message that the employer’s time matters more than the candidate’s.

What Is a Robot Recruiter

Recruitment already uses automated applicant tracking, resume screening and assessment tools. These AI systems generally support recruiters rather than replacing them.

In an automated interview, the system uses data to identify patterns and generate responses that imitate parts of human conversation. Where will this technology stop? No one knows.

Similar tools are appearing in marketing, where simulated audience segments can replace some human focus groups. The common promise is speed. AI is also transforming knowledge work, including software development, because it can perform certain information-processing tasks much faster.

Many professionals will need to learn how to use AI effectively as part of their work. The technology will change how we work, although its impact will differ greatly among occupations.

What About Authenticity

Using AI in a job interview raises deeper questions. These systems depend on energy-intensive data centres, technology infrastructure and specialized expertise, all of which have a cost.

They must also earn the user’s trust. A tool designed to reduce human bias can create a new form of machine bias or make candidates suspicious of the employer.

Authenticity may become even more valuable as automation expands. An AI interviewer may handle standardized questions for general positions, but can it truly assess the judgment, presence, influence and potential of a high-performing leader?

For management and executive positions, structured technology cannot match the interview techniques, experience and human perception of a skilled direct-approach recruiter.

Human resources are ultimately about people and conversations between people. AI will continue to assist recruitment, but executive hiring still requires human judgment.
